Research Resource for a National Swine Resource and Research Center (U42 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

National Institutes of HealthCloses Jan 25, 2027(104 days left)$960,898 – $1,008,943

Does this fit your business?

This is an NIH grant to continue operating a single National Swine Resource and Research Center that breeds, cryopreserves, and distributes genetically modified swine models for biomedical research. With only about one award expected, it is realistically for an established institution already running a comparable swine-model resource, not for ordinary small businesses. If you are not equipped to breed, genotype, and distribute research swine at a national scale, do not bother applying.

Best for
Universities and research institutions with existing swine-model or animal-resource programs, Nonprofits operating centralized biomedical research resources, Businesses with facilities for breeding, cryopreservation, or genotyping of research swine
Not for
Small businesses or startups without swine-model infrastructure, Organizations seeking general biomedical research funding rather than a centralized resource operation, Applicants without existing animal breeding, cryopreservation, or genotyping capabilities

Questions about this grant

When is the application deadline?
January 25, 2027.
How much funding can an applicant receive?
Awards range from $960,898 to $1,008,943, and only about one award is expected. This is a single-center continuation award, so most applicants will not receive funding.
Who can apply for this grant?
A wide range of entities can apply, including state, county, city, township, and special district governments, public housing authorities, independent school districts, federally recognized and other Native American tribal governments and organizations, public and private institutions of higher education, nonprofits with or without 501(c)(3) status, for-profit organizations other than small businesses, small businesses, federal agencies, U.S. territories, faith-based and community-based organizations, regional organizations, and foreign institutions. In practice, this funds a national swine resource and research center, so applicants need the facilities and expertise to breed, cryopreserve,,
Can a sole proprietor or single-member LLC apply?
The facts do not specifically address sole proprietors or single-member LLCs. Small businesses are listed as eligible, but this program funds a centralized national research center, which is not a realistic fit for a sole proprietorship.
Can a nonprofit apply?
Yes. Nonprofits with 501(c)(3) status and nonprofits without 501(c)(3) status (other than institutions of higher education) are both listed as eligible applicants.

Summary

NIH funding to continue a National Swine Resource and Research Center that breeds, cryopreserves, and distributes genetically modified swine models, provides genotyping, phenotyping, disease monitoring, and training for biomedical researchers. Eligible applicants include universities, nonprofits, businesses, governments, tribes, and other listed entities.

About this grant

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) encourages applications to provide continuing support for a National Swine Resource and Research Center (NSRRC). The NSRRC aims to enable gold-standard science in biomedical research by serving as a centralized national resource for the creation, breeding, cryopreservation, and distribution of genetically modified models. By consolidating these essential functions, the NSRRC significantly reduces variability and improves reproducibility across studies, ensuring that researchers have access to consistent, high-quality, specific pathogen-free models. Centralizing the resource also eliminates redundancy and high costs associated with individual laboratories maintaining separate facilities and breeding programs for these models, allowing investigators to focus their efforts on research rather than infrastructure. Additionally, the NSRRC provides genotyping and phenotyping services, infectious disease monitoring, and protocol distribution to facilitate their use for biomedical research. The Center also serves as a source of information and training related to the care and use of these models in biomedical research to study human health and disease and suitability of a model’s faithful representation of the biological system(s) proposed to be studied. The Center serves as a resource to lead the development of alternative or complementary approaches available, including new approach methodologies (NAMs), alongside in vivo models.
