Mechanistic Toxicology of METALS: Metal Exposure, Transport, Action, Localization, and Susceptibility (RP1 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

National Institutes of HealthCloses Jan 5, 2027(84 days left)$100,000 – $500,000

Does this fit your business?

This is an NIH research grant for mechanistic studies of how metals affect human health — transport, placental crossing, immune and CNS effects. It is for organizations that can run serious scientific research, not for businesses looking for general operating money. If your company is not doing metals toxicology or adjacent biomedical research, do not apply.

Best for
Universities and academic research labs, Nonprofits with research programs, Small businesses doing toxicology or biotech R&D, Tribal and government research bodies
Not for
Retail, finance, or arts organizations with no research angle, Anyone wanting to run a clinical trial, Businesses looking for working capital or product commercialization

Questions about this grant

When is the application deadline?
January 5, 2027.
How much funding can an applicant receive?
Awards range from $100,000 to $500,000. NIH expects to make about 20 awards from a total program budget of $15,000,000.
Who can apply for this grant?
Universities, independent school districts, state/local/county governments, tribes and tribal organizations, nonprofits with or without 501(c)(3) status, and for-profit organizations including small businesses may apply. Clinical trials are not allowed under this program.
Can a sole proprietor or single-member LLC apply?
The facts do not say. The eligibility list covers small businesses and for-profit organizations generally, but it does not specifically name sole proprietors or single-member LLCs, so you would need to check with NIH directly.
Can a nonprofit apply?
Yes. Both 501(c)(3) nonprofits and nonprofits without 501(c)(3) status may apply, as long as they are not institutions of higher education (those are covered under a separate category).

Summary

NIH (NIEHS) research grants for mechanistic studies of how metals and metal-containing compounds alter biological processes relevant to human health, including transport, placental crossing, immune and CNS effects. Open to universities, nonprofits, governments, tribes, and for-profit organizations including small businesses; clinical trials not allowed.

About this grant

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support mechanistic research to understand how exposure to metals and metal-containing compounds alters biological processes relevant to human health. Of particular interest are studies that elucidate the absorption, distribution, transport, cellular trafficking, biological interactions, and mechanisms of action of metals, including mechanisms through which metals may alter immune homeostasis, cross the placental barrier, or gain access to and affect the central nervous system. Studies may employ experimental models, new approach methodologies, computational approaches, or leverage human biospecimens where these approaches are used to address defined mechanistic hypotheses.
